Protect your equipment against damages.
The main reason for errors in serial data transportation is too low
potential or potential interference. The potential for RS232, RS422
or RS485 is approximately 7V. Even small potential changes 30V can result
in damaged electronics.
By using optic isolators the sensitive electronic (e.g. card, motherboard,
etc.) is protected and you are insured against extraordinary costs in
form of replacement of electronics and lost earnings.
The use of isolators in data lines eliminates interference that is
otherwise common at PC connected to RS232/RS485 lines (ground loop,
vertical effect, potential differences, remote lightning). Electrical
isolators are not to be confused with surge protectors that are often
incorrectly marketed for the same purpose: surge protectors have no
effect on equalizing currents that exist between the connected devices
due to the potential differences. They also cannot prevent damage to
interface components by such currents.

There is no protection against damage from lightning
that hits your wiring system, due to the extremely high energy
of the bolts. However, it is useful to protect your IT installation
against damage from lightning that impacts on lines far away from
your premises by using electrical isolators. An isolation of only
1kV already reliably prevents any lightning damage. With an electrical
strength of 50kV, the chance for such damage is practically nil.
The experience of the last few years shows that customers, who
had considerable damage done to their IT devices by lightning
reported no such incidents since they had installed isolators.
